New website design

I’ve been meaning to update my site design for a while, but haven’t found the chance or the right templates. I was installing the new WordPress 3 at work this week, and it reminded me that I needed to refresh my site. So thanks to the wonders of WordPress, here it is. This is roughly 1 hour of work by me, but lots of hard work by the wonderful people who created this theme and the plugins. Cheers!

Freshmeat.net – Please release your source code

I need an engine for a website I’m planning on building, with user submission of records, tagging, etc. Freshmeat.net looks exactly like the kind of thing I’d like to customize… but they won’t release their source code.

Guys, PLEASE! Your site is awesome and I want to partake of your awesomeness.

WordPress 2.5 – the new hawtness

I just finished upgrading my site to WordPress 2.5, and it’s awesome. The admin features on the backend are totally rearranged and are much easier/more logical to get to. There’s also a lot of new features around media postings, podcasts and so on.

If you notice anything broken, let me know.

Back Now

As I mentioned the other week, I was fed up with my old site. So I made a new one.

As clean and simple as this looks now, you have no idea how difficult it was. Most of the pain was in the fact that WordPress have made some changes to their database structure, so the data in my WordPress/Joomla love-child had to be massaged to fit in here. And that’s no small task when you don’t really know what you’re doing… But here we are. If you’re interested in what I’m using on the new site, head over to About.

New site now live!

Wort wort wort. Look around, explore, play. It’s taken me some time, I know, but here she is.

The latest iteration of J Puddy.net!

Saturday 16th

We just got back from seeing Little Miss Sunshine. I seriously SERIOUSLY recommend you go and see it. It’s an incredibly intelligent, heartfelt, and witty film about a family’s drive across the US to get their daughter to a beauty pageant. Pure genius.

Also… I’m working on 2 new websites! First of all, I’ve got a new jpuddy.net in the works. I’m hoping to have it complete in 2 weeks or so. It’s pretty exciting, as it’s going to be a “real” web “site”, and not just a blog. It’ll have a blog, naturally, but that’s not all.

Different, I know

I updated to the latest version of WordPress and of my theme, again. WordPress has moved it’s various sidebar elements to a widget system, and Squible (my theme) didn’t seem to support it properly.

So: new theme. I’m still fixing a few things, namely links, archives, and the Flickr photos widget.

More to come regarding widgets… and Opera 9!

RSS, in all it’s glory

RSS is really simple syndication. It’s one of the underlying technologies used by the blogging community, and now the web-at-large, to communicate and distribute up-to-date content.

If you visit my links page, you will see a perfect example. You might have noticed this before, as I’ve been working on it for the last month or so. Beside the link to someone’s blog is the option “View/Hide Feed.” Clicking on this will allow you to see the last 3 posts from someone’s blog. Cool eh?

Public Service Announcement

Please ignore the general brokenness of this website. I just upgraded to the latest version of WordPress (the wonderful free blogging software that powers this website), and the latest version of Squible (the wonderful free template that by-and-large makes this website look cool). I’m desperately trying to remember what parts of my site I had where. Thanks :)

Website additions, New Mix Online

In case you don’t regularly scroll down, if you do so now you’ll notice I’ve added a Popular Posts section, and a Recomended Reading section. I’ve still got to go back through some posts and find if any of them are “worthy.”

ALSO!

There’s a new mix online.

Send the pain below

Website all back to normal. I tried installing Frontpage Server Extensions last week, and had difficulty. To the uninitiated, FSE are some files that Microsoft Frontpage uses to interact with your web server. Once installed, you can edit your website live using Frontpage, just like editing a Word document. However, the server extensions can screw with a bunch of files. Specifically, your .htaccess files which control who gets to see what when they type in a web address.

Fixing it

Update: Fixed it. I think what happened was that I uninstalled Frontpage Server Extension, which I was told not to do. That’s the part that hurt the website. So I reinstalled them, and then changed one of my access files. Now it all works again, sept I can’t use the Server Extensions. Oh well… I don’t really need them anymore anyway.

(old) I just installed Frontpage Server Extension and destroyed most of my site. If anyone knows anything about FSE or WordPress or both an e-mail or phone call would be appreciated.
