We’re still here

Sorry for the lack of posts. We’re all alive and well, enjoying getting to know our little boy. For the record, we added an additional name; what’s 1 middle name when you can have 2, right?

So he’s now James Eden Armas Puddle. Armas is Finnish for beloved, and has a cool sound because it’s old school and not very common anymore. Plus in Spanish it’s weapons… and that’s wicked.

Come on out

If you’re in Lahti tonight, or the surrounding area, come on out for a night of cool community and great music. See my post a few back for details, or check my Events page.

HIV cured via bone marrow transplate

Slashdot is reporting the intriguing news that a German doctor has cured a patient of HIV (2 years free of the virus) with a bone marrow transplant from a person naturally immune. Very exciting stuff.

Running IIS and Apache on the same machine

I came across an odd quirk in IIS today. It uses a feature called Socket Pooling to bind to all IP addresses on a machine, regardless of if any websites are running on those IPs. This effectively stops you from running Apache and IIS on the same machine, if you want them both to run on port 80 (even if using different IPs). Websites in IIS will appear stopped, and will display the following if you try and start them:

The process cannot access the file because it is in use by another process.

Thankfully there’s a quick fix. Respect to agrikk More >

Content!

I promise. I’ve got all sorts of things swirling in my head. I’ll be writing some of them soon.

For now, I recommend the new Coldplay album. I’m 2 songs in, and really enjoying it.

Back in Finland, via Iceland

I’m back home now. The trip to Toronto was great, but such a whirlwind. I was totally exhausted by the end of it. And THEN I went to Iceland for a 24 hour stopover, and went horse riding and on a long day tour, followed by a sleepless night spent in a hotel lobby. Ultimate exhaustion!

I’ll post pictures soon. And thoughts on Iceland.

In Toronto again

I don’t know if I even blogged that this was happening yet, but I’m in Toronto. For work, again. Flew with Icelandair, via Reykjavik. Pretty good flights, nothing much to complain about, except a serious gotcha which I may discuss later.

I had forgotten how incredibly hot and humid Toronto summers are. Man.

Providing clean power to disaster stricken areas

Found this on Engadget today:

Getting power to disaster-affected areas is always a tough task, but Andrew Leinonen’s undergrad industrial design thesis (and recent first place entry in the 2008 ACIDO Rocket Show) might be able to solve the problem in an efficient and clever way. Dubbed Solarial, the idea is to use small unmanned airships made out of materials embedded with CIGS solar cells to autonomously deliver clean power to disaster sites by deploying anchored “power boxes” that have 12 total 120V outlets and 2 240V sockets.

I think this is absolute genius. As one of the commenters said, feels like “Why More >

Why beards are important

At least one researcher has shown that the length and “awesomeness” of your facial hair directly affects the success of your programming language.
