The forest makes you healthy
Jul 7th
Since moving to Finland, where our city is nestled amongst pine and birch forests, we’ve found ourselves feeling healthier and more energetic than ever before (Maija being pregnant, notwithstanding). Turns out… the forest is the one making us healthy! http://science.slashdot.org/story/10/07/07/0115240/Forest-Bathing-Considered-Healthful
I love that people are studying this stuff.
New options for tablets and e-readers
Jul 1st
Matt Mitchell shared this fantastic link with me, from Wired. Hahaha, check it out.
More >There was a time when your choice of book told people who you were, or at least who you wanted to be. Or, barring that, who you wanted people to think you wanted to be. Having an e-reader doesn’t say anything but “I read books and have power outlets in my home.” (Both admirable qualities, to be sure.)
Luckily for venture capitalists, I have ideas. It’s time for the world of e-readers to diversify so people can make a statement with their choice of electronic word-delivery device.

Help me Obiwan Kenobi, you’re my only hope

Remember the 3D holograms that Star Wars popularized… and no one has been able to make work in real life yet? Well, it’s getting closer. Prepare to have your mind thoroughly blown, thanks to some researchers at the University of Southern California.
Flipping awesome.
Open Source Security
Dec 4th
As a cryptography and computer security expert, I have never understood the current fuss about the open source software movement. In the cryptography world, we consider open source necessary for good security; we have for decades. Public security is always more secure than proprietary security. It’s true for cryptographic algorithms, security protocols, and security source code. For us, open source isn’t just a business model; it’s smart engineering practice. – Bruce Schneier, Crypto-Gram 1999/09/15
Modern Technology vs The Past

CNet UK has a great writeup comparing our modern technology and lifestyle with the arcane wizardry of the past. Quite witty :)
Naked on the road to healing
Nov 22nd
Over the last 2 years, my attitudes towards nakedness and nudity have undergone some fundamental changes. When I speak of nakedness, I am primarily talking about the the emotional and soul state of nakedness, that of hiding nothing from someone, of being fully vulnerable. I think nakedness has deep meanings, so I’ll also use the word nude to talk more about the state of being physically nude (unclothed).
A couple of years ago you couldn’t have told me I would find myself sitting in a small wooden shack, thigh-to-thigh with 10 sweaty nude men who I had met the day before, More >
Error upgrading WordPress 2.8.4
Aug 13th
WordPress is amazing… I just love it. Recently they rolled out inline upgrades, allowing you to upgrade the entire core with just a couple of clicks inside the browser. No more FTP.
Anyway, the upgrade to 2.8.4 (very important) failed for me, due to the following error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2357046 bytes) in /home/[xxxxx]/public_html/wp-includes/http.php on line 1331
The fix is pretty simple, you just need to increase the memory limit in your wp-settings.php file. Mine was 32MB, I upped it to 48MB and that was all that was needed.

Gone are they days when I could pop 20 chinups with the greatest of ease. But I’m climbing up that hill again. Today I successfully performed 3 sets of 10 reps of perfectly formed chin-ups. Hooray-ah for me.
I still have plenty of catchup to do to reach my little brother. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld8-1wX_1o0
