Yesterday I finally found some time to spend with my music, and you get to enjoy not 1, but 2 mixes. In the can is Beatitudes Volume 4, and I filled it up to being a 2 part-er.

Get it here. I do hope you enjoy, it’s packed full of awesome trance and prog house. There’s honestly so much good music right now, it’s blowing my mind.

I’ll be spinning at Sencity 2009 here in Jyväskylä. I’m seriously looking forward to this gig for a number of reasons. First off, this is my first gig in my (new) home town… so that’s wicked. I haven’t gotten my ass out the door enough since moving here to find any cool clubs… I know they’re here but I’ve never visited them. Fixing that problem :)

Second, I’ll be busting out my Numark Stealth Control, which has turned out to be a lovely piece of hardware. I’ve been playing with lots of different configurations, and have settled on one that works for now. I’ve opened Pandora’s box though… controllerism is the way forward, friends!

Third, Sencity is unlike any event I’ve ever played at, probably unlike any event most DJs have played at… being that it’s heavily marketed to the hearing impaired. The idea of Sencity is that it’s a club event for everyone, targeting all 5 senses. Deaf, blind, giften with both sight and hearing… everyone will get something out of it. They have DJs, VJs, live performing artists, a vibrating dance floor, on-site massage therapists, dancers, aroma DJs, and even hair-stylists.
It’s very cool. But it also poses some challenges when thinking about tracks and “packing my crate”, knowing that a decent percentage of the crowd will be only fealing the music, and only feeling a certain spectrum of the music at that.

(I put packing my crate in quotations because I’m a digital DJ… no crate.) Anyway… downloading music now. I can’t wait. There’s too much good music out there.

As is my custom, I offer a new years eve mix, commemorating 2008. Please enjoy responsibly.

2008 has been an excellent year for trance and house music. Just superb. And I think my New Years mix reflects that. We start off showcasing some juicy prog house, and gradually move into some of the best trance music I’ve come across in years. Biggups to all these artists, who are producing great music! And biggups to you for completing another year. Have a great new years celebration and an even better 2009.

The third installment in my Beatitudes series comes at a slight delay since the others. I’ll blame the summer, and a lazy attitude. Trance music is alive and well around the world, and here’s another 55 minutes of proof.

Bigger, Bolder and Better, Beatitudes Vol 2 is here!
Seriously friends, as much fun as I had putting the last one together, there’s too much incredible music coming out. From artists like Dinka. Amazing. This one starts off where the last finished, pushing a little past the electro sound, and bringing some big prog trance melodies in. We even take a little trip on the psy side. Enjoy!

Tracklist:
Inkfish, Cid Inc – Summerfrost (Tronso remix)
Dinka – Temptation
In Progress & Omnia – Avalanche (Omnia remix)
Sander van Doorn “Pura Vida” (Doorn)
Andy Moor, DJ Orkidea – Yearzero

From the mix page:

The annual New Year’s mix is a little early this year as I’ll be in NZ for New Year’s and am not bringing my gear. But early’s good in this case, cause this mix is a real treat! 2007 has brought us some great music; I just can’t get enough of Joonas Hahmo (2 tracks here, he’s also the guy behind Alt+F4). Special respect should also go to The Chemical Brothers who’s “We Are the Night” album was a highlight of this year for me. I tried to get something of theirs into this mix, but it wasn’t happening.

Anyway, enjoy! And let me know what you think.

Gareth Emery, Runaway – Outrageous (Shiloh remix)
Gui Boratto, Carlo Dall’ Anese – Beautiful Song (Fabio Castro remix)

Dynamite Festival was good. Small cosy space with the right amount of people. Made some good connections; the other DJs were all great guys. I had a terrible time with my shoes… but that’s another story. In the end an ambulance assisted me with some bandages to stop the bleeding.

Maija and I have both been through a few rough days over the last 2 weeks. We’ve been waiting, with no control, on so many things. It gets tiring having your issues worked on, after all.

Namely we’ve been waiting on her government support money, on our stuff to arrive from Canada, on a refund I’m due from Finnish immigration, and a couple of other things. I’m happy to say they’ve pretty much all sorted themselves out now over this week. Today is an excellent day, as our stuff finally arrived!

So we’re now unpacking things, finding homes for things. We feel very rich and special, haha. AND I’ll be spinning in Helsinki this weekend, so if you’re in the area, come on out.

Ed “The Watchman” King and I had the pleasure of leading worship again for TACF’s School of Ministry again this morning. In contrast to last time, it seemed as if everyone was really into it today.

I had a few conversations with people about it later in the day, as some of the staff members had heard the pounding bass coming through the walls, and had come over to take a look. I think I struck a really great balance this time, regarding knowing when to speak and when to let God work through the music alone. I had prayed this morning that I would be sensitive to when Holy Spirit wanted me to speak and when not to speak, and I felt a strong sense of peace about it the whole time. It was great to have Ed take the mic this time as well.

I found it amusing, various people asked very detailed questions about how we did things and why we did them the way we did. I think some found it surprising to hear this is really only the second time we’ve both done this, and we’re still figuring out as we go along. I talked about the general idea though, which for Ed and I is the following:

- Foremost, worship is about the heart. That means words aren’t necessarily required to worship God. (This revelation seems to help people get into it). It also means Ed and I need to be worshiping first of all. The worship leader is the lead worshiper, as they say.

- Second, we do our best to pick music that is uplifting and euphoric. God friendly samples are a bonus, but not necessary. Next, we try and speak into the mic (including but not limited to scripture) in a manner and amount that serves to keep people’s minds and hearts focussed on God. The music gets people dancing, and with your heart and mind dwelling on God, your dance becomes a very natural expression of praise. Add to that the emotional response to the euphoric nature of the music, and people can have an intimate and personal experience of worship.

After having done a somewhat similar thing with the Toronto Groove Collective, and Nightwatch, I was challenged to never underestimate what God can do through music alone. As I said, I really felt peace about it today, and was actually off the mic more than last time.

I’m excited to see where this goes. A lot of people told me today they were really blown away, and that it was a totally fresh form of worship for TACF. Hearing that really hits me, as that same kind of mind-blowing worship is what got me into DJing in the first place.

So I’m stoked. Next up, Peter Lazar offered us the services of an opera singer. I’m not thinking too much of operatic trance, but if she’s got a good voice it’ll be interesting to see what comes of it.
