Writing process used by Bioware
0I found this article quite interesting. It’s about Bioware, the company who makes Knights of the Old Republic, among other games. Knights is an RPG game, with a load of conversation. How a game with this much conversation and changeable morality based plot lines is actually planned out and written, is something that has intrigued me.
Halo 3 madness
1Before those not interested in video games write this off… hear this! Things are happening in this video game industry that have not happened before… wierd and wonderful things. It’s not going to be long, my friends, until Peter Molyneux’s vision of games being as accepted an artform as movies and books becomes reality.
Take a look at this. And this. And this. Microsoft have just stepped up their final phase of marketing for Halo 3, which drops in a few days. Most of all, take a look at this. If nothing else, it’s one of the most impressive uses of Flash I’ve ever seen. Beyond that… it’s bizarrely moving. I’m trying not to get drawn in and fall for the hype it’s supposed to instill in me… but wow.
Going to scream
2I was half way through a long and amusing tale about living in Finland when my browser ate all the pies, and I lost it. I’m so fed up with my current web platform… this Joomla and WordPress union. It’s not doing it for me anymore. I need something easier and smarter. That’s part of the reason I don’t blog very much, it’s become such a chore from the perspective of the hoops I need to jump through to make it happen.
Damncakes.
Take that, Canadian immigration
4Within 15 minutes of getting off the plane in Helsinki, we had all our 5 suitcases plus 4 carry-on pieces, had passed through customs and immigration, and were Finland’s newest immigrants. Unstinkinbelievable, if you’ve ever been through Canadian customs and immigration.
We’ll be in Helsinki for a few days with Maija’s good friend Suski, before heading up to Jyvaskyla. We’re working hard at staying awake; I for one am mightily confused. For those who can sleep on planes, this route should be quite easy… alas I didn’t sleep well, and Maija didn’t really even try.
I’ve already had my fill of delicious Finnish dairy products. I could get used to this.
And we’re off
2Tonight is the night we leave for Finland.
You know how I know? Cause it’s Tuesday.
Conditions are perfect; we got no cable TV
Conditions are perfect.
See Flight of the Conchords – Business Time.
We’re gone. See you on the other side.
Almost there
1We leave in little over a week now. The apartment is almost all packed. There are a few items still for sale, hit the main page for the list.
We’ve said goodbye to a lot of people, and have a farewell party at Kelsey’s on Dixon this Thursday night. Come on out… just let us know.
July 19
4The clock is ticking. It’s now almost one month till we leave; I can’t believe how fast time flies.
The car sold. Money in the bank; thanks to all involved. Then we got lent a car, and the day we gave it back, we got lent another car.
I got a call from the Finnish embassy to tell me they’d be refunding my application fee (for residence) as New Zealand citizens don’t have to pay it. Money back in the bank! I still don’t know what the connection between NZ and Finland is.
Speaking of New Zealand, my mother dearest and brothers are now back in the old country. Safe and sound.
We’re faxing back an application for housing today so barring any unforeseen problems, we have a place to live in Jyvaskyla!
Been listening to the new Chemical Brothers album “We Are the Night”; very good. Started listening to Digitalism; incredible! Think, Daft Punk for the 21st century. Download the Idealism album.
Pray for: a job for me, a solution to moving some of our heavier items (turntables, records)
Car for Sale
0My mum leaves for New Zealand early next month, and was going to give her car to my Dad. Dad has graciously decided to give the car to us, so we can sell it when we move to Finland.
Mother dearest is proposing that if someone wants to buy the car, she could arrange the change of ownership before she leaves on July 5, but payment could be deferred until mid-August if the buyer was willing to let Maija and I have some use of the car in July and August. We’re happy to help out with gas and insurance costs. If it doesn’t work out to share the car with us, that’s OK too; the sale is the more important part.
The car is a 1998 Plymouth Neon, 4 door, sunroof, electric windows, central locking. 165,000 kms, in great over all condition. It’s good on gas, so all you students, get excited!
If you’re interested, drop my mum an e-mail at rpuddle [at] tacf [dot] org. She needs to know if you are interested before Wednesday evening, June 27. She’ll accept the best offer she receives over $3,000.
Thanks for listening.
Locking down Firefox settings
0I was going to post this months ago, but I never got around to it. I needed it today, so I opened up the draft. May as well post it.
Locking down settings (such as proxy servers) in Firefox (and for multiple users). This article has seriously saved my bum a couple of times. Thanks man.
Truth and Evil
0I finished reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula last night. What a truly excellent book. I encourage you to read it. So many great elements and things going on. It’s told from the perspective of 5 different people, so the diction and world-view is constantly changing. Remember it’s set in the 19th century, so there’s a lot of superstition, but “everyone believes in God.” It’s fascinating to read how they put everything down to God, and in light of the spiritual happenings relating to the vampires, they have perfect room for God and his salvation. It seems to me that today someone might say there’s no such thing as vampires, and talk about there being no mention in Scripture, and “how would they fit into everything spiritually anyway?” I’m not saying I believe in vampires, it’s simply an interesting comentary on the times. That and the fact that while reading the book lots of things will seem cliché. But, this book laid the groundwork for everything that seems cliché… this is the old school, baby.
I started reading Velvet Elvis, by Rob Bell. So far I like it much, it’s sort of his manifesto on Christian faith; how God designed us and our relationship and the Bible to constantly be challenged and re-interpreted and re-invigorated and what it means to be a Christian constantly re-invented as our times change. Like that? It’s tight. Draw any conclusions between the book and my statements about Dracula and the modern church you like. NOTHING IS BY ACCIDENT.
And… I downloaded the demo for Overlord from Xbox Live Marketplace. What a freaking awesome game. Remember Black & White? Take that… roll it in with Fable (yes, also from Lionhead)… but you can only be evil. Your moral debate is not whether to be good or bad… but how bad? They change up the game (literally and figuratively) by allowing you to control gremlin-like “Minions” with your right thumbstick, that you can sweep around, dispatch to do various shenanigans, and so on. It’s totally great. I’ll be buying it for sure.
Planning continues apace for our move to Finland. My dear mother and brothers move home to New Zealand in a matter of days… I really haven’t even considered that fact yet.
