Back in Sunny Toronto

11

What the hell happened to the winter? This is flippin excellent. I get off the plane in Buffalo expecting to see mounds of snow, but lo! It rains!

Florida was a fun time. The weather was a little cooler than expected, but still plenty warm compared to here. We did a fair share of sightseeing, mostly hitting malls and beaches. Sadly, we have returned un-tanned, but at least well rested.

It was a holiday of firsts and lasts. First Christmas together, first Christmas for me away from my family, first time in Florida… things like that. It was the second or third holiday we’ve spent with Maija’s family, and we’ve decided it may be the last. Hopefully the last MacLeod/Jailos Christmas Florida vacation anyway. For all the good times we had, and all the hospitality shown to us by Maija’s grandparents and parents, the problem lied in what spending a holiday with her family fundamentally ment.

Things like: her granddad insisting we go to every service at the local Finnish church… the services being in Finnish, of course. And taking us half an hour before anyone else arrived, so we could all stand in the doorway and he could introduce us to everyone as they entered. Or… forced devotions and prayer times, people praying in the order her grandfather specified. Forced mealtimes… of all Finnish cuisine which can get a little tiring after a week.
Things like: both of Maija’s parents driving rather scarily… and her mum pointing out every possible landmark to me, as it was my first time. She insisted we get photos of specific things, and a “no thanks” doesn’t suffice. Managing to almost get a word of something in every available minute of the day (NOT joking). It was so much that I had to leave one night and go and read in the quietness of the church courtyard.

So, we had did have a fun time, and we are very greatful for them housing us for the week, free of charge. Though the bed was terrible, and the pillows worse… we did enjoy ourselves. We’re just both very happy to never repeat it.

So, how does Christmas in the Bahamas sound, any takers for next year?

Review: King Kong

3

If I had to describe the movie in just a few words, I would use words like: incredible, artful, moving, mind-blowing, thrilling… you know.

Honestly, I was thoroughly impressed. It’s long… at it had it’s weak spots, but it’s an amazing movie. Quite likely the best movie I’ve seen this year. Go see it.

I mean, we’re talking three on one T-Rex vs. Kong battles, Kong vs. inhabitants of New York City battles, and of course, the classic Kong vs. Airplanes… and so much more. The scope of this film is what totally blew me away. There were so many spots when any other director would have stopped the camera rolling, but Jackson goes the distance: throwing in all kinds of stuff that I can’t specify without spoiling the movie.

Acting wise… everyone was on the money. Jack Black was a surprise hit, but to really appreciate his role you need to wait till the movie’s done to judge. I did have a bit of trouble seeing past the rock star, but once I did, it was all great. Naomi Watts… wow. Superb. Adrien Brody seemed to need a bit of time getting going near the start, but then he too shined. The rest of the supporting cast were great as well.

The effects were also incredible. There were however a few shots nearer the beginning where I almost booed out-lout at the bad CGI, but honestly, they must have spent ALL their time on Kong and the other beasties. You WILL think they filmed with a real animal. I promise.

Just go see the movie. It’s action packed, it’s moving, it’s powerful, it also has a create message about beauty and what Hollywood superstars end up doing to the things they love. 9/10

And… I leave for Florida tomorrow. For a week. Have fun in the cold suckahs!

Xbox 360 vs. PS3

13

The 360 is already on the market, and the PS3 shall be out some time next year. Most sources are saying Spring… I’m saying June-ish.

By the numbers, the Playstation 3 slightly outshines the new Xbox in most regards. It’s worth noting however that while the Xbox only has 3 proc. cores, they do run two threads each. Also, it’s ironic to note that the 360 is physically smaller than the PS3.

Xbox 360 vs. PS3
(Care of IGN)

So, I think the choice of games and online playability will make or break these consoles. For your viewing pleasure (care of IGN again), you can now download two trailers for Armored Core 4: one captured from the 360, the other from the PS3.

Download the videos here:
First video
Second video

Scroll down to the first comment and I’ll tell you which vid was from which console. It’s best to view them with an open mind.

Website additions, New Mix Online

2

In case you don’t regularly scroll down, if you do so now you’ll notice I’ve added a Popular Posts section, and a Recomended Reading section. I’ve still got to go back through some posts and find if any of them are “worthy.”

ALSO!

There’s a new mix online.

The end of copyright?

1

Some interesting reading can be found over at Gamasutra (The Art and Science of Making Games), regarding copyright and it’s impending doom. I pretty much agree with everything he’s saying. It will be interesting to see what happens to copyright laws over the next few years.

J Puddy – Tracks I Do Not Know

1

I laid down a fun minimix today by pulling out tracks at random from Ed King’s record box. I played only tracks that I didn’t know as every DJ will tell you never to do.

Download it here.

Tracklist:
Delerium ft. Leigh Nash – Innocente (Deep Dish Gladiator remix)
tintinout – Strings for Yasmin (Matt Darey remix)
Fred Numf vs. Five Point O – Globalisation 2003 (2am mix)
M.I.K.E. presents Fascinated – Totally Fascinated (M.I.K.E.’s Fascinated Vocal mix)
Tomcraft – Loneliness (Club Mix)
P.O.S – Remember (Summer Sun)

I had planned for it to be longer, but as I started playing Remember by P.O.S I realised that I knew the track (and quite well too), so in the spirit of the mix I had no choice but to stop playing.

Review: Derailed

0

If there was ever a night when Maija regretted vetoeing my choice in a movie, last night was the night. It’s not that Derailed was a bad movie, but it wasn’t really what Maija was expecting. She thought the idea of a man and woman meeting on a train, and suddenly falling in love and ending up in bed was a romantic tale. I guess she missed the part of the synopsis where a crook breaks in on their lovemaking and sends their lives into a downward spiral. Hehe, ahh well, Aeon Flux wouldn’t have exactly fit the bill either, but it wouldn’t have been as jarring or intense.

So, Derailed. Starring Clive Oven (Sin City, Closer, King Arthur, The BMW Films) as Charles Shine, who works for a marketing firm. He’s married to Deanna, a school teacher, played by Aussie actress Melissa George (The Amityville Horror, Lauren Reed from Alias, Down with Love. She reminded me of Estella Warren.) They have a daughter with type A diabetes, around which some of the plot thickening occurs.

Charles and Deanna are bored in their marriage, and one day on the train a pretty lady (Jennifer Aniston) offers to pay for his ticket. He strikes up a conversation with her, and they begin to chat regularly on their ride in to work. After a very short while they tell some lies to their loved-ones, and head for a hotel. Right when the fun is starting, an armed robber bursts through the door of the room and demands their money. From here on, everything goes kinda crazy.

The villain is played by Vincent Cassel, the French actor who played master thief François Toulour in Ocean’s Twelve.

I’ve read a lot of poor reviews for this movie, and to be honest I’m not really sure it deserved them. The acting was convincing throughout, the characters were as dynamic as you wanted them to be and the movie flowed with a great pace and energy. It’s a very taught, suspensful film that really drew me into the action. There is an unsettling rape scene, after which we almost left the theatre, but the story is told in such a way that you really do want to stay and see justice done in the end. There were a few technical glitches, such as the voice synch being completely off for a few seconds, but it’s still worth a watch.

I give it a 4/5 for convincing characters, and a very intense thrillride. Sensitive viewers may wish to stay away from it due to the rape scene, however without spoiling the plot of the movie, near the end you will lose your remorse for the victim, and your perspective on that scene will be very different.
